The week September 19-23 sees head and neck groups across Europe organising events to raise awareness of the early signs of head and neck cancer. Early presentation and diagnosis greatly improve the chances of survival. Every year in the UK several hundred patients have a laryngectomy as their first treatment, and that may not have been needed if the cancer had been treated at an early stage.
